Laval St Germain. The Seven Summits & More
Laval St Germain is a Canadian who has climbed the highest mountain on every continent, the seven summits, including Everest, from the north side, without supplemental oxygen. He was the first Canadian to do so.
When he visits a new country, he always tries to summit its highest peak: And he visits a lot of countries because he’s a commercial airline pilot.

      Not that I know of. Plenty of VO2 max tests for on the turbo but the ones I know are quite brutal (like ramps tests) rather than proxies.

    Well, what an interesting topic, at least for us "older athletes." Life long recreational athlete here. Long distance road cyclist (daily rides 60-80km; weekend rides 100+ km; occasional centuries 100 miles = 160 km). Cross country skier. Ice skater. Ice hockey player. As a 70+ y.o. friend of mine who played goalie said, "I still go down fast. I don't get up quite so fast any more." Decades ago I was a long distance runner. Daily half-marathon. Not running at the moment cause of some wonky problem in my left knee. Doesn't stop me from taking a brisk, daily walk. Three years ago added strength training with kettlebells, heavy clubs and maces. BEST decision I ever made. I am stronger and more fit than ever. I'll turn 65 in eight weeks. Looking forward to the series.

    A few years ago, as part of a complete round of corbetts, I did a route covering all four of the high peaks from Glen Rosa - an 11-hour day in warm conditions (maybe the horseshoe you mentioned) - I'd definitely consider it a tougher day than the Rum Cuillin (which was a still-tough 9.5hr day). These days, I have far less appetite for such big days with that much ascent, so it's great to see hiking routes like these covered in so much detail. Keep up the good work!

      Hello from Shetland! There's an awful lot of very quiet minor roads between Aberdeen and the Moray coast where you'll barely see any traffic. Then there are the Formartine Way and Deeside Way as long gravel routes on old railway lines. The coastal path from Cullen to Lossiemouth is fantastic too.

    The NW 500 is on the bucket list, but I’ve heard it’s made difficult for cyclist by traffic and camper vans so this must be a very worthwhile enterprise to get a gravel alternative. (Would Sustrans help?)

    • @alwaysanotheradventure
      @alwaysanotheradventure 7 днів тому

      Sustrans have a set of criteria for their routes. I thought about approaching them Ian but decided I didn’t want it to be in any way ‘official’ so decided against going to either Sustrans or Cycling UK. The NC500 is best early (April) but the weather can veer from lovely to horrendous!

      Hi - we hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2002 (and recently turned audio recordings made at the time into a podcast podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/simon-willis2/episodes/1--So-California-e2cd0ks) The kit we used in California, Oregon and Washington on a thru-hike was different to what we use here in the UK. On the PCT we were always on a made trail so hiked in running shoes - Merrell's in 2002 but now I'd choose Inov-8. In Scotland we're frequently hiking over rough, unmarked ground that's frequently very boggy so we go with Goretex boots - I don't a have favourite brand but Inov-8 again seems good. Camping kit is different too - I still have my Tarptent but here I need a double skin tent with space and great bug netting with space to sit out bad weather. So many differences!
